You can reset the light by yourself with minimal investment from a local auto parts store. You will need to purchase a VAG service and airbag reset tool. This tool is a small diagnostic tool that you will use to hook into your car.

After you purchase or acquire this tool, follow these steps:

  1. Turn the ignition switch off.
  2. Connect the VAG service and airbag reset tool to the diagnostic system. This is located under the hood’s release latch.
  3. Find and press the reset tool’s “Select” button.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to “on,” however without starting the engine.
  5. Find and press the “Enter” button on the reset tool. Then, wait 10 seconds for the reset tool’s lights to light up.
  6. Next, turn the ignition to the “off” position.
  7. Lastly, remove the reset tool from the car and verify the job is complete.

Dealership Reset

One of the easiest ways to reset the service light is to visit your local VW dealer. There technicians will hook the car up to an OBD scan device using the Assembly Line Diagnostic Link (ALDL). This scanner will tell the technician what error code is setting off the light and will diagnose the problem.
